Joseph Weisenfeld

Joseph Weisenfeld, 92, of Monroe Township died Aug. 18, 2011. Born and raised in the Bronx, he lived in New Rochelle, NY, before moving to Monroe Township in 1985.

Mr. Weisenfeld was supervisor of ship building for 25 years for the U.S. Department of the Navy, first at Brooklyn Navy Yard and later at Bush Terminal in Brooklyn. In charge of a large staff, he regularly went to England to check specifications of newly built ships to ensure they complied with regulations. He retired in 1974. He also worked for many years as an insurance broker.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was present on the Island of Tinian when the planes took off to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

He was a member of the Congregation of Clearbrook and the Jewish Congregation of Concordia, both in Monroe Township, and of the East Brunswick Jewish Center, where he celebrated his second bar mitzva. He belonged to the Free Sons of Israel.

He was an associate member of the Hadassah Circle of Founders and endowed the information center in the new Arches Building of the Hadassah College of Technology in Jerusalem in memory of his parents and his in-laws. He became a member of the Hadassah Society of Major Donors in 2009. A charter member of the Ellis Island Foundation, he also was a supporter of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, Jewish Family Service, and B’nai B’rith and was a member of and contributor to the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies. He was a supporter of the Eldridge Street Project and a friend of the New York Zoological Society. He volunteered and worked for Lifeline for the Aged in Jerusalem.

He was past president of the Monroe Township chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and was a past president of the Clearbrook Stamp Club, Monroe Township. He was also a former member of the Section 14 Board of the Clearbrook Development in Monroe Township.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Estelle Gamerman Weisenfeld; his son, Lester of Rochelle Park; his stepson, Ronald Silverman of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; two grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 21 with arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick.
