Morris Shulman

Morris Shulman, 87, of West Orange and Lake Worth, Fla., died Oct. 27, 2012.

Mr. Shulman worked with his brothers in the family business, Mickey Finn Discount Department Stores (Hoboken, Union City, and Perth Amboy), one of the first discount retailers in the country and which expanded during the 50s and 60s. He worked at first as treasurer, and then later became president, retiring in 1996.

He was a recipient of the French Legion of Honor for his role in World War II. As a Prisoner of War, he was held captive in Ile de Groix, France, by German military. He was among the only POWs exchanged during the war, and was immediately returned to combat on a new mission at the Battle of the Bulge. He received many medals for his service and was a member of Chapter 1 of the Former Prisoners of War, NJ chapter.

He attended schools in Elizabeth and Rahway, graduating from Rahway High School. He attended New York University on the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1950 with a degree in business and advertising. He was active in the NYU Club and Stern Business Center.

Predeceased by his son, Michael, he is survived by his wife, Valerie (Lowitz); two daughters, Joyce Anne of Lake Worth, Fla., and Carolyn of San Francisco; a brother, Paul; and a granddaughter.

Services were held Nov. 2 with arrangements by J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels of Cedar Grove. Memorial contributions may be made to “Chapter 1 of the Former Prisoners of War” at Lyons.
