Sandy storm relief effort postpones Super Sunday
The Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County is rescheduling its annual Super Sunday fund-raiser to focus on relief efforts in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
The all-day phonathon, originally scheduled for Nov. 18, will instead take place on Jan. 13 in a new location — the federation offices in South River — from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
But that doesn’t mean the federation rested on the 18th. Instead of Super Sunday, federation was set to hold a Hurricane Relief Day for residents to drop off cleaning supplies, toiletries, and food at its South River offices to be distributed to victims whose lives have been upended by the storm.
The items are to be passed on to the Kosher Food Pantry at the Jewish Family & Vocational Service of Middlesex County and other local food banks and aid agencies.
“Federation has a long history of being a ‘go-to’ agency in times of crisis,” said executive director Gerrie Bamira. “Once the storm hit, we knew we had to focus our time and resources to immediately help those impacted by Sandy.”
Even in advance of the event, a steady stream of concerned community members were dropping off supplies at federation to help their neighbors.
On its new date, Super Sunday will feature community volunteers in four phone sessions to raise funds to help local Jewish agencies and projects, as well as programs in Israel and around the world. Follow-up call nights are scheduled for Jan. 21 and 22.
“Although the date has changed, we are confident that our community will come out to support this year’s community campaign and help us to reach our goals to enable federation and our partner agencies to support the vital programs and services we provide to the community,” said Bamira.
