Science and religion
In the Editor’s Column (“Mystery Science Theater 2011,” Sept. 22) Mr. Silow-Carroll asks: “Does maintaining this tradition [Judaism] depend on discrediting humanity’s pursuit of empirical knowledge?”
Maimonides believed that science and Torah are both true. In The Guide for the Perplexed, he discusses how we can reconcile apparent discrepancies by reexamining our understanding of what the Torah says, in particular the use of metaphor. Even if you believe that the Bible is literally the word of God, that doesn’t mean that God’s word is always literal.
