Seymour Ribot

Seymour Ribot, 90, of South Orange and Loveladies Harbor died Oct. 28, 2012.

Dr. Ribot practiced at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center from 1956 to 2010 and was a clinical professor of medicine at the New Jersey College of Dentistry and Medicine. At NBIMC he served as chief of nephrology from 1964 to 1994, establishing New Jersey’s first hemodialysis program and the state’s first successful kidney transplant. A humanitarian who believed in and advocated for public access to hemodialysis, he was a pioneer in the field of nephrology and dialysis, dedicated to his patients, research and scholarship, and the education and promotion of young physicians and staff. His innovations improved the efficiency and effectiveness of dialysis, making it more widely available.

He served as president of the American Federation of Clinical Research’s NJ chapter, chairman of NJ State Health Department’s Advisory Committee in Renal Disease and Hypertension and the End-stage Renal Disease Network Coordinating Council, president of the NJ Nephrology Society, and chairman and founder of the Transplant Society of NJ. He was founding director of the nephrology program at Christ Hospital in Jersey City.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Harriet; four sons, Marc, Greg, Douglas, and Jesse; and three grandchildren.

Services were held Oct. 31 at Oheb Shalom Congregation, South Orange, with arrangements by J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels of Maplewood.
