Sidney Isler

Sidney Isler, 88, of Edison died Jan. 6, 2016. Born in Jersey City, he spent most of his life in Linden before moving to Edison 18 months ago. He also had a home in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Mr. Isler worked in the food industry. 

He attended Union County College.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a member of Congregation Anshe Chesed in Linden. He was an active leader in B’nai B’rith, serving as district governor. He was president of the Linden/Roselle B’nai B’rith Lodge, adviser of B’nai B’rith Youth, Council Israel chairman, and Council Hillel chairman. He was a senior vice commander of Jewish War Veterans and did service for the Anti-Defamation League. He also served on the Environmental Commission for the City of Linden.  

He received numerous awards and citations for his community service, including the B’nai B’rith Community Volunteer Service Award, the National Youth Service Award, citation for Distinguished Service from the Jewish Federation of Central New Jersey, and the Award of Merit from United Jewish Appeal.

Committed to helping young people, he was instrumental in the national distribution of a guide, “Play It Safe,” that was originally published by the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy, his twin brother, Jules, his sisters, Hilda Finkelstein and Florence Garfinkel, and a daughter, Robin Isler Prager, he is survived by his daughter, Vicki Isler (Mitch Grossman) of Metuchen; and six grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 8 with arrangements by Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Edison. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Anshe Chesed, B’nai B’rith International, or Temple Emanu-El.
