‘Valentine’s Day’ at TBA
Former Major League player and manager Bobby Valentine will be the featured speaker at the annual men’s club sports breakfast at Temple B’nai Abraham, Livingston, on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 9 a.m.
Valentine played 10 seasons in the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, California Angels, NY Mets, and Seattle Mariners. After hanging up his spikes as a player, he became the manager for the Texas Rangers in 1985 and helmed the Mets in 1996, leading them to back-to-back postseason appearances, including the 2000 “Subway Series” against the NY Yankees.
Valentine also managed the Boston Red Sox and spent seven years as skipper of the Chiba Lotte Marines in the Japanese Pacific League, leading them to a championship in 2005. His experiences in Japan were the subject of a 2008 documentary, The Zen of Bobby V. Most recently, he’s been a broadcaster/analyst for several TV and cable networks.
The men’s club is also seeking donations of new or gently-used pro sports jerseys to be distributed to boys clubs in Essex County. For each jersey donated, the donor attendee will receive one raffle ticket for prizes at the program.
Admission to the breakfast is $18 for adults/$36 per family and includes a hot and cold breakfast buffet.
