Vera Kovar

Vera Kovar, 91, of Edison died April 9, 2015. Born in Brooklyn, she also had lived in South Orange, Clark, Monroe Township, and Paris, France. 

Miss Kovar was the director of arts for the West Orange school system for many years.

She received her master’s degree in art from Cooper Union before pursuing her master of education at NJ Teachers College (now Kean University) in 1943. 

She purchased her first home in her 70s and enjoyed volunteering on community committees for the Museum Club and the Lecture Club of the Minds.

She lived in Paris during the 1950s, receiving in-depth art instruction from her mentor, Hans Hoffman, in her ongoing study of cubism and fauvism. She also was a member of Hoffman’s Providence Town, RI, Art School. She worked mainly in acrylic paint medium, but also loved pottery.

Predeceased by her brother, Arthur (Frieda), she is survived by her nieces and nephews, Mark and Ellen Kovar of Toms River, Sherri Kovar of Iselin, and Amy and Chuck Resnik of Owings Mills, Md.; two great-nephews; and a great-niece.

Services were held April 12 with arrangements by Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Inc., Edison. Memorial contributions may be made to B’nai B’rith at The Ponds, Monroe.
