Chabad of West Orange honors survivors and heroes
Last month, 70 people gathered at Chabad of West Orange to hear Noga and Georgy Pechter tell their story of survival during the October 7 attacks on Kfar Aza. They spoke of loss, resilience, and hope, describing how their peaceful life in Kfar Aza was shattered by the attacks. They had to tell their children that some of their closest friends and neighbors were murdered or kidnapped. They were grateful that their 12-year-old’s classmate, who was held hostage in Gaza, was returned home 51 days later. Noga Pechter described how their son asked Georgy to be a father figure to his friends whose fathers were murdered. Her talk was accompanied by raw photos and videos taken during and after the attacks.
Rabbi Mendy Kasowitz welcomed the group. Igor Vish, who hosted the Pechters during their visit, introduced them.
Noga Pechter said, “We are not professional speakers. We just want to share our story. We feel so loved and supported by this wonderful community. This is what gives us strength to carry on.”
IDF reservists Itamar Israelit and Oria Isaak, representatives of Gav Lalohem, spoke about fighting in Khan Yunis, Gaza, and southern Israel. Gav Lalohem is a non-profit organization that supports and mentors young IDF soldiers transitioning to civilian life.
“It was terrible, and we had to carry out many dangerous operations,” Mr. Israelit said. “Our units sustained many injuries and casualties. However, we must defend our land and our people.”
Rabbi Kasowitz emphasized the importance of unity and supporting one another in the face of rising Jew-hatred worldwide. The audience recited Shema Yisrael and Am Yisrael Chai, symbolizing the strength and resilience of the Jewish community.
