GOA takes on Names, Not Numbers Shoa film project

GOLDA OCH ACADEMY in West Orange has been selected to participate in the Names, Not Numbers curriculum, which aims to bring to students a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and the lives of those who survived it. 

Through the project, created by educator Tova Fish-Rosenberg, students, supported by journalists, filmmakers, educators, and scholars, interview Shoa survivors and create from the filmed interviews a documentary, preserving the survivors’ stories. 

Twenty GOA high school students have been chosen for the program, being run under the direction of social studies teacher Michael Stern and marketing and communications associate Erin Sternthal.

At the project’s opening session, Jonah Kaplan (GOA class of 2004), a reporter at ABC11 in Raleigh, NC., and Ken Kurson, former editor-in-chief of The New York Observer and a parent of a GOA student, taught the students interviewing skills. 

A documentary filmmaker will combine the 15-minute segments produced by the students along with their testimonials to also create “Names, Not Numbers: A Movie in the Making.” The interview subjects will be honored at the premiere, scheduled for June 3.
