JVS of MetroWest announces student loans and grants for 2024
The costs associated with pursuing a higher education are skyrocketing and can pose a significant barrier to prospective students. To help ease the burden, Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest has announced a new application cycle for interest-free student loans and grants in 2024. The JVS Perlmutter student loan program is open to Jewish college students from the New Jersey MetroWest area (Essex, Morris, Sussex, Union, and parts of Somerset counties) who need financial assistance to pursue their college or graduate school studies. Loans are need-based and interest-free, with a maximum of $3,000 per year. They are awarded only after students have exhausted all other forms of financial aid available and must be paid back within a five-year period, which begins a year after the student has graduated.
JVS also is accepting applications for its Shapiro Foundation grants — one-year grants to help Jewish students pursue post-graduate degrees in medicine, medical science, nursing, and/rabbinical school. Funded by the estate of Belle Shapiro, the grants can be renewed yearly, pending the approval of the executors of the estate.
JVS will host an online information session for anyone interested in learning more about the loans and grants on Wednesday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m.; applications are due June 3.
The Perlmutter Student Loan Program, named to honor Ben Perlmutter, who started the program more than 40 years ago and died in 2021, is made possible through people who have established endowment funds that are administered by the Jewish Community Foundation. The Shapiro Grant Program is funded annually through the generosity of the Shapiro Foundation, established in memory of Louis Shapiro, Rebecca Shapiro, Frances Shapiro, and Belle Shapiro.
Since 1939, JVS has been committed to helping people help themselves by identifying and breaking down barriers. Education is a vital step toward self-sufficiency and independence — a step we aim to make more accessible for students in the community.
