Kyiv’s chief rabbi is sandek at local bris
Last week, a bris was performed for a middle-aged Jewish man from Kyiv who recently moved to New Jersey. It was done at the Teaneck office of Dr. Jerry Friedman, who was the mohel, together with Dr. Elliot Shulman of Jersey City. Rabbi Yochanan Markowitz, Kyiv’s chief rabbi, was the sandek and was instrumental in preparing the man for his bris.
In connection with that week’s parshah, the man receiving the bris chose Yitzchok as his Jewish name. He said that through his bris he is connected to his forefather who was the first Jew to have a bris at eight days, and he said that he is proud to carry the name.
A celebratory meal was served for friends of Yitzchok who flew in from Kyiv, Florida, and Los Angeles to show their support.
Rabbi Mordechai Kanelsky of Bris Avrohom, who organized the bris, addressed those at the seudah and expressed his admiration for Yitzchok. Rabbi Markowitz presented Yitzchok with a pair of tefillin.
