Lecture on Zionism and the origins of international human rights
THE STATE OF Israel and the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights not only share a birthday, but also remain intertwined in debates about anti-Semitism, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and U.S. foreign policy. James Loeffler, Berkowitz Professor of Jewish History at the University of Virginia, will draw on his recent award-winning book “Rooted Cosmopolitans: Jews and Human Rights in the Twentieth Century” to discuss the histories and interconnected futures of global justice and Jewish politics.
His lecture, “From Zion Shall Go Forth the Law: The Unknown History of Jews and Human Rights,” will be held on Tuesday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Douglass Student Center in New Brunswick. Sponsored by the Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life, the talk is supported by the Henry Schwartzman Endowed Fund. The lecture is free but advance registration is required.
