NJ Rep presents reading of ‘The Shabbos Goy’
THE NEW JERSEY Repertory Company in Long Branch will offer a staged reading of “The Shabbos Goy” — a romantic comedy set on the Upper West Side — on Monday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m.
The play’s author, Cary Gitter, was represented in the theater’s All About Eve Festival of the Arts last October with his one-act “How My Grandparents Fell in Love” — about his grandfather’s first meeting with his eventual bride in Poland, against the just-emerging Nazi threat.
“The Shabbos Goy” is about Angie Mastrantoni, a hip, young New Yorker. When her neighbor Seth — a 32-year-old, divorced Orthodox Jew — needs help with some Shabbat-prohibited tasks, he turns to Angie, and the unlikely stirrings of love ensue.
Born and bred in New Jersey, Gitter is a multi-award-winning artist whose works include several with themes centered on Jewish culture and characters (he was a finalist in the international Jewish Playwriting Contest).
