October 7 survivors to speak locally in January
Ziv Abud and Eliya Cohen, survivors of the October 7 terrorist attack in Israel, will speak at “From Darkness to Light: Stories of Courage and Hope.” The program, organized by JCC MetroWest, is set for January 7, at 7:30 p.m.
The evening, chaired by Andrea and Bryan Bier, includes the survivors’ firsthand accounts of loss, courage, and hope after the terror attack. It offers a unique opportunity to hear their story and reflect on resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity. Their experiences are a testament to resilience, healing, and the power of the human spirit, and the story is meaningful for the MetroWest community, which has followed their journey closely.
Ziv Abud, a Nova music festival survivor from Tel Aviv, endured the loss of her nephew and his girlfriend in the October 7 attack, and her partner, Eliya Cohen, was kidnapped and held captive in Gaza for 505 days. Ziv became a leading advocate for Eliya’s safe return. Despite being faced with hunger, darkness, and violence, he maintained unwavering faith.
The MetroWest community has followed the Cohen family’s journey closely. Program co-chairs Andrea and Bryan Bier met Eliya’s parents in July 2024. They were moved by the family’s strength and spirit and later introduced them to Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest. Later that year, Eliya’s mother addressed the MetroWest community via satellite during the October 7, 2024, community commemoration, details her family’s experience with candor and grace.

At a time when many are seeking strength, their stories remind us that light can emerge even from the darkest moments.”
