Safam to play tribute to Kushner yeshiva supporters

SAFAM: THE JEWISH-AMERICAN Sound will perform on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy/Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School (JKHA/RKYHS) in Livingston.

The concert is the school’s annual event held to recognize its Atid Society members and corporate sponsors. 

Nachum Segal, president of the Nachum Segal Network and an alumnus of the school’s forerunner, the Hebrew Youth Academy, will serve as master of ceremonies. His late father, Rabbi Zev Segal, was among the school’s founders.

Safam singer-songwriters Dan Funk, Joel Sussman, Robbie Solomon, and Alan Nelson formed the band, based in Boston, in 1974 and have toured widely and recorded over 15 albums. Their repertoire reflects traditional Jewish music and a wide range of styles, including rock, pop, folk, calypso, Latin, chasidic, and cantorial music. “Our sound is a synthesis of our Jewish and American roots,” Funk said. “People walk out feeling good about their Jewishness.”

The concert, chaired by Bat Sheva and Murray Halpern, kicks off the yeshiva’s 2017-18 annual campaign. 

Support for the event provides the school’s students “with the knowledge and skills they require to ensure Jewish continuity,” said Murray Halpern, who serves on the school’s board of trustees. “Atid means future — and our students are the future of our community and klal Yisrael.”

The concert, which is open to the public, will be followed by a dessert reception for all with Safam and Segal. Tickets, at $75, can be purchased at jkha.org/ATID.
