Summer Symbiosis art exhibition opens in Livingston

The Heidi Gallery at Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled presents Summer Symbiosis. It’s the 14th annual collaborative exhibit between the WAE Center (Wellness, Arts, Enrichment) at JSDD, a holistic, expressive arts learning center for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and the Matheny Arts Access Program, a fine arts initiative to empower individuals with IDD to create art without boundaries.

Summer Symbiosis will be on display from July 22 through August 18; there’s an opening reception on July 28, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Heidi Gallery, 310 Eisenhower Parkway, in Livingston.

Summer Symbiosis marks a milestone in the partnership aimed at bringing the work of artists with IDD into commercial art spaces. For more than a decade, works have been exhibited in the hallways of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Summer Symbiosis features the work of 50 artists, celebrating their individual talents and the long-established relationship between the two arts organizations, joining forces in the new art venue Heidi Gallery at JSDD.

Marilynn Schneider, a member of the Heidi Gallery advisory committee and a longtime WAE Center director, said, “Through many years, the relationship between Matheny Arts Access and the WAE Center has transformed the lives of our members. This exhibit has brought the two organizations and their many artists together annually to share pride, anticipation, and connection. The two professional teams have worked hard and seen the reward of artists who see and hear kindred spirits, sharing ideas, inspirations, and their life stories. This growing connection between artists has impacted families, friends, and caregivers, enriching the lives of all who have come to participate and observe this event.”
