Weekend of music at Temple Shalom

Innovative Reform movement leader Cantor Ellen Dreskin will serve as artist-in-residence at Temple Shalom, Aberdeen, Friday-Saturday, March 27-28. 

Dreskin is the coordinator of the new cantorial certification program at the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at HUC-JIR in New York. 

On Friday at 8:15 p.m. she will present “Shabbat Worship in Song,” a musical journey to discover how the prayers and melodies hold the keys to making the most of communal worship. Temple Shalom teens will take part.

Saturday morning services, at 10:15 a.m., will feature interactive study designed to engage adults and children.

The afternoon will include a bagel lunch at noon ($5 charge), followed by an adult learning program, “The Glamour in the Grammar: A Little Hebrew Can Go a Long Way!” This program will explore how single words, a twist of a phrase, or the addition of a prefix or suffix can change worshipers’ understanding of a prayer and enhance communal worship. (Babysitting will be available; make reservations in advance.)

“M’laveh Malkah: Stories and Songs for the Coming Week” — the Saturday evening concert at 8 — will feature Dreskin, the Temple Shalom Choir, and Temple Shalom Youth Choir; it will be an informal, folk-oriented, participatory evening. Tickets ($25, $10 per child) will be available in advance or at the door. 

This weekend of music is sponsored by the Shalom Rocks Concert Fund and Temple Shalom Brotherhood and Sisterhood.
