Daffodil project continues in Short Hills on Sunday
Chabad at Short Hills continues a tradition that it began a few years ago when its Hebrew school participated in a Jewish Federation of Greater Metro-West project to plant daffodil bulbs on Chabad’s lawn in memory of the 1.5 million children who were murdered in the Holocaust. The program will continue this Sunday,, at 11:45 a.m., at Chabad.
Now, local survivors were asked to give the names and photos of children in their family who died. Chabad made plaques for each child, and in a program for parents and community members, the stories were told and students placed the plaques near the daffodils.
Each year children’s names are added. This year one of the Chabad families will add pictures of two cousins and tell their stories.
There will also be a plaque for Zusha Bielski’s baby, who was killed before Zusha went to the woods and saved hundreds of Jewish people. That story was made into the movie “Defiance.” Members of the Bielski family are part of the Chabad community.
Chabad also hopes to honor the memory of the five siblings of Paulette Dorflaufer, 82, a Holocaust survivor, who is well known in the community as the “fashionista crossing guard.” She will be at the program. Photos of nine cousins of Eric Dorfschneider will be memorialized on plaques.
