Foreign films highlight Rutgers festival

The 13th annual Rutgers Jewish Film Festival, which runs from Oct. 30-Nov. 11, offers 17 critically acclaimed features, shorts, and documentaries from the Czech and Slovak republics, France, Germany, Israel, Poland, Ukraine, and the United States.

All programs will be held at the Regal Cinema Commerce Center, North Brunswick.

The festival is sponsored by Rutgers’ Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life and made possible through a grant from the Karma Foundation.

Festival Highlights

Tuesday, Oct. 30

7:30 p.m.: Orchestra of Exiles, with director Josh Aronson and Dorit Straus. An additional screening will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 12:30 p.m. An opening night celebration features a buffet dinner and dessert reception for patrons of the festival.
Thursday, Nov. 1

3:15 p.m.: Five Brothers (French). An additional screening will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at 9:15 p.m.

7:30 p.m.: The Flat (English, German, and Hebrew with English subtitles). An additional screening will be held Sunday, Nov. 4, at 11:45 a.m. with Professor Michael Levine, Department of German, Rutgers University. (See related story, page 30.)

Saturday, Nov. 3

7:15 p.m.: My Australia (Hebrew and Polish with English subtitles). An additional screening will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, at 4:45 p.m.

9:30 p.m.: Remembrance (English, German, and Polish with English subtitles). An additional screening will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2:30 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 4

11:30 a.m.: Nicky’s Family with Peter A. Rafaeli, consul general of the Czech Republic. An additional screening will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m.

2:15 p.m.: Dusk (Hebrew and Spanish with English subtitles) with Professor Yael Zerubavel, director, Bildner Center.

4:45 p.m.: Foreign Letters (English, Hebrew, and Vietnamese with English subtitles) with director Ela Thier and actress Dalena Le.

7:15 p.m.: Hava Nagila (The Movie) with Roberta Grossman, director. A reception for young professionals will be held in the lobby prior to the film.

Tuesday, Nov. 6

3 p.m.: Free Men (French with English subtitles) with Professor Richard Serrano, Departments of French, and Women’s and Gender Studies, Rutgers University. An additional screening will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m., with Professor Ethan Katz, History and Judaic Studies, University of Cincinnati.

7 p.m.: Lenin in October (Hebrew and Russian with English subtitles) with Dr. Sasha Senderovich, Russian and East European Studies, Lafayette College.

Thursday, Nov. 8

12:30 p.m.: Kaddish for a Friend (Arabic, German, and Russian with English subtitles) with remarks by Professor Fatima Naqvi, Department of German, Rutgers University.

An additional screening will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 11

Noon: Inventing Our Life: The Kibbutz Experiment (English and Hebrew w/English subtitles) with Professor Ziva Galili, Department of History, Rutgers University.

2:15 p.m.: Footnote (Hebrew with English subtitles) with Professor Azzan Yadin-Israel, Department of Jewish Studies, Rutgers University.

2:30 p.m.: Hitler’s Children (English, German, and Hebrew with English subtitles).

7:15 p.m.: Life in Stills (German and Hebrew with English subtitles) with director Tamar Tal.
