Teen philanthropists write big check for tzedaka

About 500 people were in attendance as the Jewish Community Youth Foundation marked completion of its eighth year at its annual Philanthropy Fair and Check Presentation Ceremony, held Feb. 27 at Robbinsville High School. A total of $72,000 was distributed to 27 programs by 164 area teens.

JCYF is a teen philanthropy program administered by Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Greater Mercer County, the Ricky and Andrew J. Shechtel Philanthropic Fund, and the Jewish Federation of Princeton Mercer Bucks.

Lily Pepper of Princeton Junction, a junior at Trinity College and a 2008 JCYF graduate, won the first annual JCYF Distinguished Alumni Award for her commitment to the Jewish community and her participation in many philanthropic and community service activities. She received $360, which she will donate to the Jewish National Fund to rebuild the forests devastated by the fires in the Carmel region.

In the JCYF program, each grade has a different focus of tzedaka, but students can concentrate on a particular interest. For example, a teen interested in helping feed the hungry, in eighth grade, when the focus is on local social services, might give money to the Ohel Avraham Kosher Food Pantry at JF&CS, and in 12th grade, when the focus is on Israel, can allocate money to feed needy children in Israel.
