Two-part Super Sunday to offer activities for all

This Sunday, the Greater MetroWest community’s two campuses will be the sites of activities designed to entertain, educate, and elicit support for the federation’s local and global social service programs.

Super Sunday, the annual fund-raising phonathon and day of community building in support of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater MetroWest NJ, will take place on Dec. 8, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Alex Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus in Whippany, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Wilf Jewish Community Campus in Scotch Plains.

Donations from its largest community fund-raiser of the year support the work of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ, which, through its beneficiary agencies, provides services for people in need locally — it encompasses Essex, Morris, Sussex, and Union counties and parts of Somerset County — in Israel, and in other countries.

“Super Sunday is the single most important day on the federation calendar,” said Bethany Nadel and Ken Rotter of Westfield, Super Sunday cochairs, in a statement. “Our ability to provide vital assistance to the most vulnerable in our community both locally and in Israel depends on Super Sunday’s success. That is why we hope everyone will do their best to step up in whatever way they can.”

The event’s other cochairs, Jessica and Aaron Wolff of Denville, said, “To us, it’s about community. We’re all here to help and support each other. Whether you directly need the aid of federation or its partner agencies, you are receiving the benefit by living in the community.

“It’s important we continue to give back to the community that serves us so there is a community for the next generation.”

While volunteers staff phone banks, calling on community members to make Super Sunday pledges, a host of activities will be taking place around them; highlights include:

• Rock and Wrap@Super Sunday — A DJ will provide the rock while visitors wrap gifts for the needy. Participants are asked to bring a new, unwrapped gift appropriate for any age. (noon-2 p.m., Scotch Plains; 2-4 p.m., Whippany)

• Early Childhood Family Activities — Story time with PJ Library and other activities (10 a.m.-noon, Scotch Plains); Story time with PJ Library and Family Shvitz Dance (10:30-11:30 a.m., Whippany)

• Yoga — Adult Yoga (9 a.m., Scotch Plains); Family Yoga (11-11:30 a.m., Scotch Plains); Adult Yoga (3 p.m., Whippany)

• Family Fun Day — For children of all ages with special needs and their families (1-3 p.m., Scotch Plains)

• Teen/College Student Call Session — With prizes, food, and an opportunity to earn community service hours; a bus to and from Scotch Plains will be available. (4-8 p.m., Whippany)

Vendors will be at both sites selling Judaica and other items. Volunteers will conduct a bone marrow registry, blood drive, nonperishable food and new coat drive, and nonprescription medication drive.
