Veteran Sklar honored in Newark

Murray J. Sklar of Livingston was among 10 veterans honored by the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders during its Veterans Day celebration on Nov. 12 at the Hall of Records in Newark. Each honoree received a citation from State Sen. Teresa Ruiz (D-Dist. 29). 

Sklar, who was born in Newark and graduated from Weequahic High School, applied for voluntary induction with the U.S. Marine Corps and reported for active duty in July 1943. 

He was assigned to Marine Assault Air Warning Squadron #5 and was discharged with the rank of corporal. He received the Asian Pacific Medal, the American Victory Medal, American Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. 

Sklar received a BS and an MA in mechanical engineering from Newark College of Engineering and held a NJ professional engineering license for 40 years. 

He is past commandant of the West Hudson Detachment of the Marine Corps League, and served as adjutant and state chaplain of the Department NJ Marine Corps and received its Lifetime Achievement Award. He is the judge advocate of the Livingston VFW Post #2856, a member of the Livingston JWV Post #740, and past president of Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston, its men’s club, and the Chapel of the Four Chaplains. 

He and his wife of 65 years, Harriet, have two children, two grandchildren, and a great-grandson. 

The celebration featured entertainment by trumpeter Bruno “The Trumpet Man” Lee of Newark.
